Healthcare and green-tech: Trentino rewarded at Smau
October 2022

Trentino's healthcare and green technologies were awarded at Smau Milano with the Premio Innocazione (Innovation Award), given every year to institutions and companies that have renewed themselves through new organizational models, process digitization or product innovation.

Receiving this prestigious award were the Trento Proton Therapy Center, for its collaboration with ProM Facility, and the Municipality of Borgo d'Anaunia, which uses the local hydroelectric plant to power an eco-sustainable mining farm.

Trentino's Public administration and healthcare: a model to follow

Trentino is the province with the highest density of innovative startups in Italy, thanks to investments put in place by the public administration. Acceleration and accompanying paths, open innovation initiatives, meetings with investors and business angels are just some of the initiatives conceived to stimulate the birth and growth of new technology companies.

Trentino land of startups, then. But not only. The public administration and the world of health care are also investing their resources to renew themselves and make the Autonomous Province of Trento a model to follow at the national level. Smau therefore decided this year to award the Innovation Prize to two realities that come precisely from the public and medical spheres.

3D printing is also being exploited today in the fight against cancer. It is happening in Trento, at the Protont Therapy Center of APSS (Azienda Provinciale per i Servizi Sanitari) where some devices developed and 3D printed at ProM Facility are being evaluated and validated. The technologies and materials provided by the rapid prototyping and 3D printing laboratory at Polo Meccatronica in Rovereto, Trentino Sviluppo's high-tech incubator, have enabled the creation of prototypes of some particular instruments to facilitate the daily work of doctors, physicists and hospital technicians who treat dozens of patients every day.

The green mining farm of the municipality of Borgo d'Anaunia

The municipality has decided to enhance the hydroelectric power plant "Alta Novella" by allocating one-fifth of the energy produced to power a datacenter that generates computing power useful for the operation of blockchain networks and the mining of new cryptocurrency units. A solution that allows the administration to design a clear future for the facility, while also giving stability to the municipal budget. The facility will then be refurbished to become a full-fledged supercomputing center of the power of 4 petahash, ideal for mining virtual currencies in a green way. The project was designed in collaboration with IDM srl of Trento and Alps Blockchain, which provided the 40 supercomputers installed inside the power plant.
