The Life Sciences represent, without a doubt, a strategic sector for the competitive growth of Trentino.
This is demonstrated by the research centres, which develop cutting-edge technologies and projects at international level. This is demonstrated by the companies, which are present on markets all over the world with unique products and services. This is demonstrated above all by the public institutions, which for years have supported the development of the entire cluster with targeted investments and shared projects.
Let us discover together the main projects and the most significant initiatives involving the Life Sciences sector in Trentino.
S3 and the new Technology hub
Life Sciences have been included by the Autonomous Province of Trento within the Smart Specialisation Startegy (S3), which indicates the areas of specialisation on which Trentino has decided to focus its investments in the period 2021-2027 in order to increase the competitiveness and welfare of the territory. Specifically, Life Sciences fall within the "Health, Food and Lifestyle" development trajectory, which includes:
- Smart healthcare, telemedicine and technologies for territorial medicine
- Personalised medicine
- Preventive medicine and medical devices
- Prevention and well-being: advanced diagnostics and lifestyles
- Technologies for food safety, quality and traceability
In line with the decision to include Life Sciences in the Smart Specialisation Strategy, there is also the plan by the Province to create a new technology hub in Trentino in the next few years. It will be built in Rovereto and will work in close dialogue with the two other poles present in the city, Polo Meccatronica and Progetto Manifattura.
The new infrastructure will aim to consolidate the Trentino ecosystem in the biotech sector, proposing a model that will focus on bringing together public and private research and creating an environment of collaboration and continuous exchange of ideas. The areas around which the cluster's activities will focus include genomic biology and all areas of biological investigation, including computational genomics, bioinformatics, personalised medicine and artificial intelligence.
The Science4Life cluster
As part of the strategic actions of territorial players in favour of Life Sciences, there is also the creation, by Trentino Sviluppo, of the Science4Life cluster, with the aim of bringing together all the companies in the province active in the sector. The core of the project is the creation of an Observatory and a dedicated service platform through which to gather information, promote services and stimulate networking.
The Trentino companies in the Science4Life cluster number 58 and are divided into:
- 4 categories: Living better, Living longer, Boosting efficiency, Boosting research
- 4 areas: Medical devices and instruments, Pharmaceuticals and biotech, Digital healthcare system, Services
Participation in MEDICA 2023
One of the key initiatives with which the Trentino System aims to promote the Science4Life cluster outside provincial and national borders is the participation in MEDICA. With over 5,300 exhibitors and more than 81,000 visitors, it is one of the most important B2B trade fairs in the world dedicated to the medical sector and a must for those involved in applied Life Sciences technologies.
Trentino Sviluppo decided, during the 2023 edition (Düsseldorf, 13 - 16 November), to present the Territorial System through the 12 companies of the Science4Life cluster which responded to the call for entries offering the opportunity to be present at the fair through a multimedia catalogue made available to professionals and visitors. This was an excellent opportunity to make themselves known to the best in the sector at an international level and lay the foundations for future collaborations. Five of them have also decided to participate in the event with their own space: three within the Italian collective of Agenzia ICE (which also hosts Trentino Sviluppo) and two at the stands of their representatives abroad.
